Battling the weather, it was a tough two day hunt for the perfect location to capture the 2023 annular eclipse. I drove over 1500 miles across three states in search of a break in clouds on this overcast week in the pacific northwest. Subfreezing temperatures in Nevada and a sand storm kicked up by blistering winds and driving rain in central Oregon led to very little sleep and a whole lot of worry.

On the morning of the eclipse, I was up at 2 am beginning to watch the radar, looking for any signs of a break in clouds. By 5 am I had to pull the trigger and pick a direction, taking a guess at what clouds would be like 3 hours and 100+ miles away. As the hours dwindled away with the miles, I honed in my approach. I'd spent several months scouting dozens of locations to grab a shot like this around the PNW, just in case the weather had been bad, and I was closing in on my last option.

Upon arriving, I knew I'd lucked out. There was a wall of clouds moving in rapidly from the west, but with the sun rising in the east it created the perfect gap to grab a shot of this elusive eclipse for just enough time to enjoy it.

In the end though, I'd made one fatal mistake. In working out the math for the angle of the ridge to the horizon, the distances between us at all the locations, the elevation of the sun vs my altitude at all the spots I'd scouted, I'd failed to take into account the size of the tree. In reality, you'd need a very small tree or a very, very expensive lens to capture a shot like this. While it could be done with the right equipment, I simply didn't have it.

In the end, this shot became a two shot composite, taken from the same location at the same time, and while a lot of work went into creating this image, a double exposure effect had to be created in post production.

Still, nothing quite captures the magic of the universe like an eclipse.
